The Prophet’s Prayer for His Ummah
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s prayer for his ummah is a significant event demonstrating the deep connection and compassion he had for his community. This hadith reveals His supplications to Allah and His concern for his followers.
The Prophet’s Prayers
One day, the Prophet (PBUH) recited Ibrahim’s (AS) words: “Indeed, many have led [others] astray with falsehoods. But whoever follows me, then surely he is from among them.” (Abraham, 36:40) and Isa’s (AS):
“If You punish them – indeed, they are Your servants; if You forgive them, indeed, You are the Exalted and the Wise.” (Al-Ma’idah, 5:118). After reciting these verses, he raised his hands to the sky and:
“O Allah, protect my ummah, have mercy on my ummah!” supplicated while weeping. In response to this request, Allah (SWT) said:
“– O Jibril! – Does your Lord not know best? [This is so that people may know] go, ask Muhammad why he wept.”
When Jibril (AS) arrived, the Prophet (PBUH) expressed that he was shedding tears due to his concern for his ummah. Then Allah (SWT) said:
“– O Jibril! Go to Muhammad and give him this glad tidings: ‘We will be pleased with you concerning your community, and We shall never cause you to grieve.’” (Muslim, Iman, 346)
Emulating the Sunnah of the Prophet
This hadith clearly demonstrates the profound love and compassion the Prophet (PBUH) had for his ummah. By reflecting on this situation, we should consider how much affection we hold for him and to what extent we have been able to reflect the Sunnah as a manifestation of that love. Striving to emulate His character is of great importance in terms of guiding us.
