The Prophet (PBUH)’s Nighttime Munajat
The supplications of the Messenger of Allah – peace and blessings be upon him – during nighttime prayers reflect a profound understanding of Tawhid that inspires and moves hearts. According to the narration of Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them both – the supplications included in the Prophet’s (PBUH) Munajat reveal His deep devotion to Allah and His awareness of servitude.
The Prophet’s Munajat Prayer
It was heard that the Messenger of Allah – peace and blessings be upon him – recited the following prayer after nighttime prayers:
O Allah! I ask You for a grace from Your favor with which You may guide my heart, regulate my affairs, arrange what is disordered in me, instill into me perfect faith, grant me righteous deeds outwardly, purify my deeds and intentions with sincerity, inspire me with the path of obedience to Your pleasure, grant me a friend with whom I can be intimate, and protect me from all evil!
O Allah! Grant me such faith and certainty that no doubt remains. Bestow upon me such grace with which I may attain a high station in Your sight in this world and the Hereafter.
O Allah! I seek deliverance through Your favor in whatever judgment You pass, and I implore for the most honorable stations of the martyrs, and I desire the life of Your blessed servants, and I ask for help against our enemies!
O Allah! Although my understanding is limited and my deeds are few, I bring my needs to Your door (and seek their fulfillment from You). I am in need of Your mercy, and I present my condition.
O Lord, who governs affairs and fulfills them, who meets the needs of hearts and brings healing, I pray that You separate me from the torment of Hell as You have separated the seas, and protect me from destruction and the torment of the grave.
O Allah! If any good has been granted to one of Your servants or a grace promised to one of Your creations, and I have not realized it, nor reached my intention, and therefore it has remained outside what I asked for, then, O Lord of the Worlds, I implore You for its occurrence as well, and I ask You to bestow it upon me with Your mercy.
O Allah! O possessor of the strong rope and the straight path! In the Day of Resurrection, when you promise Hellfire for the disbelievers, I seek refuge in You from Hellfire, and in the eternal day that follows, I desire to reach the proximity of the Most High with those angels who are close (and who) have prostrated and bowed much (in this world), and those who fulfill their oaths. You are the possessor of boundless mercy; You are the possessor of countless love; You do what you will.
O Allah! Make us guides, not misled, and lead us to guidance. Make our friends friendly to us, and our enemies hostile to us. We love You for the sake of the love we have for Your love. We hate those who oppose You because of Your hatred for them.
O Allah! This is our supplication. Its acceptance is with You through grace and generosity. This is our effort; You are our support.
O Allah! Grant my heart a light, my grave a light; place before me a light, behind me a light; to my right a light, to my left a light; above me a light, beneath me a light; into my ears a light, into my eyes a light; into my hair a light, into my skin a light; into my flesh a light, into my blood a light; and into my bones a light!
O Allah, increase my light, grant me a light that is equivalent to everything I have said, grant me a light that encompasses what I have not said!
I glorify the One who has put on majesty and made it His sign. I glorify the One who has put on greatness and, because of that, has bestowed abundant gifts upon His servants. I glorify only You, to whom praise is due. I glorify the possessor of grace and blessings. I glorify the possessor of majesty and generosity. I glorify the possessor of grandeur and bounty.
