The Dua (Supplication) Recited by Our Prophet (peace be upon him) at the Battle of Badr
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
Prayers of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Allah’s Help at Badr
Our Prophet (peace be upon him), faced with the difficulty of the Battle of Badr, expressed his sadness to his Lord due to the overwhelming number of polytheists exceeding a thousand, while his companions were only three hundred thirteen. [1] Turning towards the Qibla, he raised his hands and offered supplications in a loud voice:
“O Allah! Fulfill Your promise to me. O Allah! Grant us victory in this battle. O Allah! If You destroy this community of Muslims, there will be no one left on the earth to worship You!”
Continuing his supplications with his hands raised towards the sky, his cloak fell from his shoulder. Seeing this, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) approached him, picked up the cloak from the ground, placed it back on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) shoulder and came closer saying:
“O Messenger of Allah! Your supplication to your Lord is sufficient. Allah Almighty will surely fulfill His promise to you.”
At that very moment, the Most High and Glorious Allah revealed the following verse:
“Remember when you asked your Lord for help, and He answered you: ‘Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand of the angels.’” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:9)
Allah Almighty assisted the believers with His angels that day. This event demonstrates how Allah accepts the sincere supplication of a servant and what can be achieved through faith. (Muslim, Jihad, 58; Bukhari, Maghazi, 4)
