What is the reward for the one who remembers Allah the Most? What are the virtues of frequently remembering Allah?
A companion came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
FREQUENT REMEMBERANCE OF ALLAH
“–Which Jihad has the greater reward?” he asked. The Prophet –peace and blessings be upon him– replied:
“–The Jihad of the one who remembers Allah the Most!” The man asked:
“–Which fasting person has the greater reward?” The Prophet –peace and blessings be upon him– replied:
“–The fasting of the one who remembers Allah the Most!”
Thereafter, the man repeated the same question for those who pray, give Zakat (obligatory charity), go for Hajj (pilgrimage), and give Sadaqah (voluntary charity). The Pride of Creation –peace and blessings be upon him– replied to all of them:
“–The reward is for the one who remembers Allah the Most!”
Thereupon, Abu Bakr -may Allah be pleased with him- said to Umar -may Allah be pleased with him-:
“–O Umar! Those who remember Allah have taken away all the goodness!” Hearing this, the Master of the Worlds –peace and blessings be upon him– turned towards them and said:
“–Yes, that is so!” (Ahmed, III, 438; Heysemi, X, 74)
That is to say, habituating ourselves to being in a state of remembrance at all times will be the greatest gain for us.
