The Divine Law of Trial and Purification
This worldly life is not a place of pleasure and indulgence, but rather a land of trial and wisdom from beginning to end. The illnesses, losses, and hardships that believers encounter throughout their lives are spiritual remedies sent by Allah to purify them and remove the love of the world (masiva) from their hearts. Hazrat Geylani said, “Indeed, calamity befalls mankind. Only a few escape it. Your duty is to ask for patience from Allah,” thereby expressing the inevitability of calamities and the necessity of patience. Calamities, like gold purified by fire, cleanse the sins of the believer and elevate his spiritual rank.
Abandoning Complaint and Acceptance
Complaining and rebelling when calamity strikes, lamenting to people (complaining about Allah to creation), is the clearest sign of spiritual immaturity and weakness of faith. A true knower does not grimace in times of adversity and maintains his dignity according to the rule that “being patient when calamity comes indicates the virtue of knowledge.” Complaining about hardships to servants will not alleviate the pain of the calamity, but may also invite Allah’s wrath. The believing person should sense the divine mercy behind the pain, say “There is wisdom in this,” and submit completely to Allah’s decree and destiny.
Safety and Blessings at the End of Patience
Allah has prepared countless rewards for those who endure hardships and are patient. The patience and surrender shown during difficult times ultimately transform into great spiritual enlightenment (inshirah) and spiritual wealth. As Hazrat Geylani stated, “How can you find a sense of gnosis if you cannot be patient with its calamity and hardship?” The servant who protects his faith in the face of calamities and crowns his patience with gratitude attains heart peace in this world and is honored to be among prophets, siddiqs (truthful ones), and righteous people in the hereafter.
