Adversity as a Blessing
This worldly life is not a place of rest for believers, but rather a challenging land designed for the maturation of the soul. The difficulties, illnesses, and pains that people encounter are, in fact, hidden blessings that Allah uses to bring them closer to His Essence. Geylani (may Allah be pleased with him) explains this method of divine training, saying: “Allah does not punish a servant; He only sends calamities of the nature of trials and tests his patience.” No ease comes without paying a price and overcoming hardship. “Every expanse has within it distress.
The Elevating Power of Patience
Perfect believers who walk the path of truth are tested with the most severe calamities, but this relentless testing uniquely increases their spiritual degrees in the sight of Allah. “Those who stand firm for the sake of Allah are afflicted with trials; they increase in degrees with their patience.” Just as gold melts in fire and separates from its worthless impurities and becomes purified, so too does the human heart burn in the fire of adversity, cleansing itself of pride, hypocrisy, and love of the world. Those who do not rebel against fate and divine decree witness the divine grace within that calamity.
