“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of Hellfire.” Which supplication is this?

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) visited a patient who was extremely weak and asked:

“Are you supplicating to Allah for something or asking Him for anything?” The patient replied:

“Yes, I used to supplicate: ‘O Allah! Give me the punishment You will give me in the Hereafter in this world.’” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said:

SUPPLICATION FOR HAPPINESS IN BOTH WORLDS

“Glory be to Allah! You do not have the power to do that. Would it not have been better if you had supplicated like this:

رَبَّنَٓا اٰتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْاٰخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbenâ âtinâ fî-ddunyâ haseneten vefi-l-âḣirati haseneten vekinâ ‘ażâbe-nnâr(i).

“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of Hellfire.” (Al-Baqarah, 201)

Upon that, the man made the supplication and was cured. (Muslim, Zikir, 23; Tirmidhi, Adab, 71/3487)

When supplicating, we should pay attention to what we ask of Allah Almighty and make requests with proper etiquette. We should constantly ask Allah for goodness, blessings, and well-being.
