The Prophet’s (PBUH) Supplications in Rukū and Sujud
In Islamic belief, supplication (duʿāʾ) holds great importance. The supplications of the Prophet (PBUH) serve as an example for Muslims. In this article, we will examine a duʿāʾ narrated by Lady ʿĀisha (r.a.), which the Prophet (PBUH) recited during rukū or sujud.
The Source and Meaning of the Hadith
Lady ʿĀisha (r.a.) narrated:
“One night, I did not find the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and thought he might have gone to one of his wives. So, I began searching for him. Then I returned and found him in rukū or sujud, saying:
“(O Allah,) Glory be to You and praise be to You. There is no deity except You.”
Upon this, (a little embarrassed) I said:
“My father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! I am preoccupied with one matter, and you are preoccupied with another!”” (Muslim, Ṣalāt, 221)
The Importance of the Duʿāʾ and Lessons to be Learned
- Submission: The Prophet’s (PBUH) duʿāʾ expresses submission to Allah Almighty.
- Appreciation of Blessings: The duʿāʾ, beginning with praise (ḥamd), reinforces the feeling of gratitude for Allah’s blessings.
- Expression of Tawhid: The phrase “La ilaha illallah” is a beautiful example of the belief in tawhid (the oneness of God).
