The Roots and Seeds of the Tree of Faith
Abdülkadir Geylânî (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the stance and development of faith in the human heart as if it were a magnificent tree. Through acquiring patience, acceptance, certainty, agreement, and knowledge, the mercy of Allah is generously bestowed upon the servant. When the lights of Tawhid (Oneness of God) and faith emerge in the heart, this tree of faith begins to sprout. The roots and seeds of this tree are extremely firm and stable; they are connected to Allah with unwavering belief. Its fruit and leaves are abundant, its branches fresh and shady. True faith is not merely a declaration remaining on the tongue, but rather a powerful trunk that encompasses the entire being of a person, providing them with spiritual coolness and tranquility.
Actions in This World and the Preservation of Faith
The development of the tree of faith is directly linked to the actions of a person in this worldly life. It finds new growth and vitality every day. To grow and mature, it does not need artificial fertilizer from external sources. The actions of those who possess faith involve fulfilling commands, patiently abandoning prohibitions, surrendering to their fate, entrusting what is destined to Him, and agreeing with Him in all matters. This obedience and submission protects the spiritual tree from winds and storms. Allah, Exalted and Sublime, thus completes His generosity towards other servants whom He favors and bestows upon while they are in this world. The tree and plant grow and develop through being nourished by tears and repentance.
The Tree Nourished by Wealth and Gratitude
Hak (Truth) also removes the spiritual pests that would poison and rot the roots of the tree of faith. Ar-Rahman (the Most Compassionate) desires its faith, for it is a tree of the wealthy whose yield is weak. Allah has granted him what fills his tree of faith from that very thing, and the strength and permanence of the tree are provided through his eyes with worldly blessings. If this blessing is cut off, the weak tree will wither. Eventually, that person either becomes a disbeliever or denier, or mixes with hypocrites or apostates. This time, He strengthens his faith with them, so that the cessation of blessings and wealth does not affect him. The servant cultivates his tree with divine guidance and success, keeping it green for eternity.
