The Importance of Sha’ban and Its Observances

Sha’ban al-Muazzam, the second month of the Blessed Three Months (Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan), holds a significant place in the Islamic world. Approaching Allah through prayers, fasting, and other acts of worship performed during this month is possible. So, what are the virtues of Sha’ban? What practices are recommended during this month?

What to Do During Sha’ban
  1. “Allahumma Barik Lana Fi Sha’ban Wa Balighna Ramadan” Dua: Reciting this meaningful supplication at least once a day is important in seeking Allah’s blessing to reach the month of Ramadan.
  2. The Prophet’s (PBUH) Statement on Revelation: The Messenger of Allah – peace and blessings be upon him – stated, “Sha’ban is my month, Rajab is Allah’s month, and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah.” This highlights the importance of Sha’ban. [Referencing prophetic tradition]
  3. Frequent Fasting: The Noble Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – fasted most frequently during this month after Ramadan. Therefore, fasting should be abundant in Sha’ban.
  4. Reading the Quran: The Companions (Sahabah) would dedicate themselves to reading the Quran upon sighting the crescent moon of Sha’ban, and we too should read the Quran al-Kareem frequently during this month, reflecting on its meaning.
  5. Multiplied Rewards for Deeds: Every virtuous deed performed in this month has its reward multiplied manifold.
  6. Seeking Repentance (Tawbah): Repenting for past sins, seeking refuge in Allah, and asking for forgiveness is an important aspect of the month of Sha’ban.
  7. Sending Blessings upon the Prophet (Salat wa Salam): Increasing blessings and salutations upon the Messenger of Allah – peace and blessings be upon him – is essential to attain his intercession.
  8. The Book of Destiny: In this month, the names of those who will die within a year are transferred from the Book of the Living to the Book of the Dead.
  9. Night of Bara’ah: This month contains the Night of Bara’ah (Forgiveness). One should fast during its day and spend the night in worship and wakefulness. It is recommended to perform twenty rak’ahs of prayer on this night.
  10. Gates of Goodness: The gates of goodness open in Sha’ban, and sins are erased.
  11. The Fast of the Last Monday: It has been announced in a blessed hadith that fasting on the last Monday will result in forgiveness of sins. It is important to take advantage of this opportunity. [Referencing prophetic tradition]
  12. Paying Zakat: It is beneficial for Muslims to pay their zakat during this month, so that it strengthens and supports them for the fasts they will observe in Ramadan.
  13. Making Use of Valuable Time: In short, these months are precious times that should be utilized. One should strive to spend them with prayer and worship.
