What is the reward for remembering Allah the Most, and what are the virtues of frequently mentioning Him?
A companion approached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asking:
FREQUENT REMEMBERANCE OF ALLAH
“–Which Jihad has a greater reward?” The Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – replied:
“–The Jihad of the one who remembers Allah the Most!” The man asked:
“–Which fasting person has a greater reward?” The Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – replied:
“–The fast of the one who remembers Allah the Most!”
Thereafter, the man repeated the same question for those who pray, pay Zakat (obligatory charity), perform Hajj (pilgrimage), and give Sadaqah (voluntary charity). The Best of Mankind – peace and blessings be upon him – replied to all of them:
“–The reward is for the one who remembers Allah the Most!”
Upon this, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him):
“–O Umar! Those who remember Allah have taken away all the goodness!” Hearing this, the Master of the Worlds – peace and blessings be upon him – turned towards them and said:
“–Yes, that is so!” (Ahmed, III, 438; Heysemi, X, 74)
That is to say, accustoming ourselves to being in a state of remembrance at all times will be the greatest gain for us.
