Which Believer is More Virtuous?

Every believer possesses different levels of reward in the sight of Allah. So, what does a virtuous believer look like? Our Prophet (peace be upon him) shed light on this topic with an important hadith.

Abdullâh bin Shaddâd -may Allah be pleased with him- Narrates

THE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE MOST VIRTUOUS BELIEVER

Three men from the Banu Uzrah tribe came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and embraced Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “Who will take care of them?” Talha -may Allah be pleased with him- volunteered for this responsibility.

One of these three men, under the care of Talha -may Allah be pleased with him-, was martyred in the first campaign. The second campaign also took one more. The third passed away.

Talha -may Allah be pleased with him- saw these three men in a dream in Paradise. Surprisingly, he found them arranged in order, with the person who died in his bed leading the way, followed by those who were martyred in sequence. This puzzled Talha and he immediately went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and recounted his dream.

The Prophet (peace be upon him), alleviating Talha’s bewilderment, said:

“There is no believer more virtuous than one who spends his life on Islam without ceasing the remembrance of Allah, glorifying Him, proclaiming His greatness and testifying to His oneness.” (Ahmed, I, 163)

This hadith clearly demonstrates that virtue lies not only in martyrdom but also in living a life filled with constant dhikr (remembrance) and gratitude.
