Decorating the House, Not Just the Door
Religion is not merely about correcting outward appearances or performing ostentatious rituals. Today, many people exert great effort to appear pious, devout, and respectable externally, while neglecting to cleanse the impurities within their inner worlds, such as hypocrisy, envy, pride, and worldly greed. Geylani (q.s.) illustrates this terrifying misconception with a tremendous example: “A believer first repairs his interior… What is the use of a beautiful door when the inside is ruined? The value within determines the importance given to the door.” Empty, soulless acts of worship performed merely for show are like applying gilded paints to the exterior facade of a dilapidated house; they collapse at the first tremor.
Living in Secrecy, Away from Ostentation
True piety lies in the sincere connection established with Allah in secret and solitude. While obligatory prayers may be performed publicly with a congregation, the heart’s actions and supererogatory acts of worship should be kept as secrets. The warning, “Woe to you, you draw back behind the curtain so that people don’t see it. But you do not see the Creator,” proclaims that what one should truly feel ashamed of and account for is Allah. A person with a corrupt inner self weeping before the public or adopting an ascetic demeanor (hypocrisy) plunges them into a spiritual abyss. The true believer always prioritizes the cleanliness of their inner being over the fame of their outer appearance.
Spiritual Wealth and the Insignificance of the Exterior
Great Sufi saints progressing on the path of Sufism may appear ordinary, even poor or destitute from an external perspective. However, their hearts are magnificent palaces illuminated by the light of Allah. They flee from fame, titles, and the applause of people. Geylani (q.s.) declares, “Your exterior facade does not concern me much… What is important to me is your essence,” thus waging war against formalism. The servant who abandons the shell (form) and focuses on the essence (sincerity and purity of heart) becomes a shining star in the realm of the unseen.
