What is the Evil Eye?
The evil eye (nazar) is a concept also mentioned in the Qur'an. In verse 105 of Sūrat al-Baqara, the existence of the evil eye is indicated: "...ve bilâ şübbe innehu lelikażu min sehri’n necm." (Indeed, this is something that comes with the magical effect of the stars.) The evil eye arises from the reflection of envy and negative emotions through the gaze. This situation can harm a person's physical or spiritual health.
Why Are Infants Affected by the Evil Eye?
Infants and children, with their innocence and beauty, attract attention. This can trigger feelings of envy and invite the evil eye. Furthermore, since infants' immune systems are not yet fully developed, they are more vulnerable to the negative effects of the evil eye.
Ways to Protect Against the Evil Eye
- Reciting Verses and Supplications: Regularly reciting sacred verses such as Sūrat al-Falaq, Sūrat al-Nās, and Āyat al-Kursī provides significant protection against the evil eye.
- Modest Dress (Tesettür): Especially the modest dress of women reduces the effect of the evil eye.
- Islamic Traditions: Traditional practices such as naming infants and performing rituals like "küfe" are also believed to be protective against the evil eye.
- Intention: Praying for and seeking healing for someone you think has been affected by the evil eye may be beneficial.
Supplications to Recite
Some supplications that can be recited for protection against the evil eye are as follows:
- Āyat al-Kursī: Āyat al-Kursī, which is verse 255 of Sūrat al-Baqara, provides very strong protection against the evil eye.
- Sūrat al-Falaq: Sūrat al-Falaq begins with the name of Allah and is recited for protection against the evil eye.
- Sūrat al-Nās: Sūrat al-Nās is also recited for protection from the evil gaze and sorcery.
- "Bismillahillazi la yedurrru ma’a zikrihi şerfun ve la dayyettu ma’a taatihi zehır." This supplication is also effective against the evil eye.
