Fear (Havf) and Hope (Reca): What are They?
In Islamic belief, the spiritual journey is accomplished with two wings: fearing Allah’s punishment and justice (havf), and placing hope in His boundless mercy and grace (reca). Imam Ghazali lists fear and hope among the exalted stations that lead to salvation in the section of “Munjiyat” of his work, “Ihya Ulum al-Din” 1, 17. Fear is a shield that protects the servant from disobedience and prohibitions; hope is a spiritual nourishment that increases enthusiasm in worship and provides resilience against hardships. One who rides the horse of fear should avoid falling into despair, and one who rides the horse of hope should avoid complacency (inertia); therefore, a believer must always maintain balance between these two feelings.
How Fear Educates the Believer
The fear of Allah is not merely fearing the fire of Hell, but rather a deep concern about losing the Creator’s favor and falling from His sight. In those who possess knowledge (Marifa), this fear manifests as awe and reverence (haşyet). “The fear of Allah prevents unlawful things from entering the stomach and abandoning paths leading to sin.” A servant should not boast or rely on his acts of worship; for the greatest sign of blessedness is to carry the anxiety of being rejected, even while obedient, wondering ‘Will my deed be accepted?’ Fear breaks the arrogance of the nafs (self) and leads it to a complete servitude.
The Comprehensiveness of Mercy and Divine Glad Tidings
In Islamic morality, fear should never turn into despair (yeis). Reca (hope) is the heart’s refreshment through realizing that Allah’s mercy surpasses His wrath. Even if a servant falls into sins, he must hasten to repentance knowing the generosity and forgiveness of The Truth are boundless. Hope keeps the servant’s enthusiasm alive. As Ibn Ataullah al-Iskandari said, “When you commit a sin, let it not lead you to despair from your Lord’s mercy; for Allah forgives whom He wills with His grace” 31. A believer who establishes balance between fear and hope neither relies on his deeds and becomes arrogant nor distances himself from his Lord because of his sins; he always continues on his path with humility and submission.
