The Decay of the Essence Without the Husk
O heedless soul, claiming to seek truth! Today, many people think they can abandon the obligatory duties, permissible and prohibited acts (outward rulings) of religion, and directly reach spiritual stations (Sufi paths and ultimate reality), saying, “My heart is pure,” or “What matters is love within.” However, Imam Ghazali (may Allah be pleased with him) likens Sharia to the husk of a tree and truth to its essence. Just as the essence of a fruit or tree stripped of its husk quickly rots and becomes infested, so too is a claim of spirituality devoid of the protective armor of Sharia destined to become a plaything of Satan and base desires. This reality is very clear in the work that explains the foundation of Shah-i Naqshband’s path.
Not Rejecting the Noble Guest (Guidance)
The Exalted Allah has not left His servants adrift, but has sent Sharia as a guide to show them the straight path (Sirat al-Mustaqim). The work *Makamat-i Shah-i Naqshband* expresses this guidance as follows: “Since you are guided by it / Do not shun the noble guest of Sharia” (1). This guest has knocked on our door to bring blessings, light to the heart, and direction to the intellect. Whoever does not let this divine guest in due to his own arrogance and does not design his life according to its rules, has seated Satan as a guest of honor in his own home.
Sharia: An Ocean of Grace Overflowing in Seven Seas
For the people of spirituality, inspiration, ecstasy, and secrets are revealed only as they swim within the ocean of Sharia. Those who see the outward rules of religion as superficial and inadequate are blind to the truth. However, it is stated in poetry: “Sharia overflows in seven seas” (1), declaring that divine laws actually contain an infinite spiritual depth.
Perfect Harmony of Inner and Outer
True spirituality is being adorned outwardly with Sharia and inwardly with sincerity and truth. Perfect guides have never exempted their disciples from worship, but on the contrary, as their spiritual levels increased, so did their adherence to and meticulousness in observing Sharia. Whoever says, “I have attained the secret of truth, I do not need outward rules,” has fallen into a pit of heresy. The true Naqsh is the “Naqsh of Truth” imprinted on the heart; and the foundation and color of that Naqsh are only and exclusively created by Sharia’s pristine methods.
