The Battle Between Angelic Inspiration and Satanic Whispers
Imam Ghazali states that the human heart is always surrounded by two different powers: on one hand, “angelic inspiration,” which promises goodness, confirms truth, and touches the heart with Allah’s light; on the other hand, “Satanic whispers,” which encourage evil, deny truth, and lead people to wrongdoing. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded those who find angelic inspiration in their hearts to praise Allah, and those who feel Satanic whispers to seek refuge in Allah from them. The heart is a battlefield; the person opens the doors of their heart to the soldiers of whichever force they incline their will towards.
Satan’s Proximity to Humanity and Bad Character Traits
Satan’s approach to humanity is not merely an external whisper; The Prophet (peace be upon him) reminds us that “just as blood circulates in the body, Satan also permeates into a person,” revealing that the danger lies in the weaknesses within human nature. Satan enters through weaknesses such as heedlessness, anger, excessive desire, and suspicion (suizan). Suspicion is one of Satan’s most powerful weapons because a person who carries evil within themselves tends to see others as evil as well. It is not enough to simply say “La havle wala kuvvete illa billah” to ward off Satanic whispers; the true solution is to completely cleanse the heart of these bad character traits, which are the gateways for Satan.
Remembrance (Zikr) and Ways to be Freed from Whispers
Sufi scholars have disagreed on whether or not whispers cease entirely during remembrance (zikkurullah – remembering Allah). Some scholars argue that Satan falls silent and retreats during remembrance, while others state that the whispers do not completely disappear but are rendered ineffective because the heart is covered with remembrance, allowing the servant to ignore them. The most important thing is for a person to keep their heart under muraqaba (Allah’s watchfulness). When a person adopts remembrance as a shield and eradicates the root of bad character traits, all paths for Satan to enter the heart are closed, and the believer attains spiritual security (itminan).
