The Prophet (PBUH)’s Prayer for Blessings and the Depths Within This Dua
The companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a beautiful custom: they would bring the most delicious examples of each fruit to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Prayer for Blessings
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would take the fruit and recite the following prayer:
“O our Lord! Bestow abundance on our fruits! O my Lord! Bestow abundance on our city (Medina)! O my Lord! Bestow abundance on our times, our provisions! O our Lord! Abraham is Your servant, friend, and prophet. And I am Your servant and prophet. Abraham prayed for Mecca; I also pray for Medina. Just as You bestowed blessings upon Mecca for Abraham, I pray that You bestow a similar measure of blessing upon me.” (Mawahib, 2 / 23)
After reciting this blessed prayer, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would take the ripe fruit into his blessed hand and call the youngest child in the house to give it to them.
Matters Contained Within the Prayer for Blessings
The important points explained in this honorable hadith are as follows:
- The importance of prayer for the blessing of sustenance and provisions: The Prophet (PBUH) has commanded us to make supplications for our food to be blessed.
- Abraham’s Prayer for Mecca: The prayer that Abraham made for Mecca is indicated by this noble verse:
“And He will incline to them [i.e., the people of Mecca] hearts from among those who follow, and so that you may bring in a party of them over the blind ones. And that they might give thanks.” (Surah Ibrahim / 37) - The blessing of Medina: The blessings of the prayer made by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for Medina have been seen throughout the centuries. Wealth coming from Mecca and other regions has made Medina prosperous, and this blessing continues to this day. Even today, the hearts of all believers are turned towards Medina, which is a source of respect for the honor of the Prophet (PBUH).
- The attribute of Khalil: The designation of Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) as “Khalil” is due to the intense presence of Allah’s friendship and love in his heart. Similarly, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is also the most beloved servant of Allah.
