Heart Diseases and Misguided Treatments
Know, O seeker of truth! Just as the human body becomes ill and needs physicians to find healing, so too does the heart (soul) become afflicted with pride, hypocrisy, worldliness, and envy. Many people today feel this spiritual constriction, this soul crisis; however, they seek healing in the wrong places – in philosophy, empty desires, or fabricated rituals. Yet, within the work Makâmât-ı Şâh-ı Nakşibend, a tremendous prescription is offered to humanity: “Sharia is the cure for every ailment / Sharia is Lokman to hearts afflicted” (1). Just as the legendary Lokman Hekim knew the balm for every physical wound, so too does the totality of divine rules – Sharia – represent the only absolute balm to heal all spiritual ailments of the heart.
Absolute Freedom Within Boundaries
The ego inherently seeks to escape rules and limitations. It views the boundaries of halal and haram in Sharia as a burden, a prison. However, as Imam Ghazali (may Allah be pleased with him) frequently emphasizes, releasing the ego is not freedom; it is enslavement to the devil’s masquerade. The work expresses this truth: “Service to God is essential for the soul / Sharia is a crown and sovereignty upon your head” (1). True freedom and honor lie not in being enslaved to the ego’s base desires, but in submitting to Allah’s commands and wearing that divine obedience as a ‘crown.’ While adherence to rules may seem burdensome to the common folk, it is an immense state that elevates the enlightened to sovereignty.
A Gateway of Healing and Grace for Sinners
Human beings are inherently prone to error. Sometimes they succumb to their ego, sometimes they fall prey to Satan’s whispers. However, Islamic ethics never allows for despair. No matter how deeply a servant falls into sin, the door of repentance and healing is always open. As stated in poetry: “Praise be to Allah that Sharia is / A cure, grace, and beneficence for those who commit crimes” (1). Divine laws were not revealed to punish or discourage humanity, but to cleanse them from the mud they fall into, erase the discord within their hearts, and open the doors of eternal life (bestow beneficence) upon them.
A Radiant Jewel Coming From the Unseen Realm
Sharia is not merely a worldly law or a dry legal system; it is directly a divine light filtering down from the realm of the unseen (the esoteric). The couplet “Let it flow from the nur of concealment / Sharia is an opened mine of jewels” (1) in the work, reveals this profound spiritual dimension. Human beings, with their limited intellects, cannot know what is good for their souls or what will save them in the afterlife. This ‘jewel’ is not a product of human invention, but an unparalleled gift bestowed upon servants from the mine of the Creator’s mercy.
Spiritual Blindness Brought On By Denial
Those whose hearts are blind and live within the prison of their egos cannot comprehend the value of this jewel. They find Sharia to be outdated or attempt to twist it according to their own limited reasoning. In these sublime lines describing the path of Shah-i Nakshibend, the situation of deniers is summarized: “How can those who deny know its worth / They do not know that Sharia is faith.” The one who denies is not merely rejecting a rule, but destroying the essence of faith itself. For belittling the rulings of Sharia is to belittle the Absolute Will (Allah) that established them. It is impossible for the light of faith to fully settle within the inner world unless the outer limbs are cleansed with the waters of Sharia.
