Union in the Light of Truth
The works of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi contain profound wisdom that points to humanity’s common quest. As seen in the source text, even people with different beliefs are emphasized to be engaged in an inner search for understanding the secrets of the universe. This quest is shaped by grasping a knowledge coming from the divine source, defined as the radiance of revelation. According to Rumi, this light leaves its mark in every area of human existence and serves as a guiding principle. However, obstacles encountered on this path, different beliefs or disagreements, are apparent problems that complicate the effort to reach the ultimate truth.
Cüzi Intellect and Akl-i Küll: The Source of Knowledge
Rumi explains the limitations of human intellect and the source of knowledge with an impressive analogy. Cüzi intellect, meaning individual intelligence, is dependent on learning and experience; however, Akl-i Küll, meaning universal intellect, is the source of everything. Although humanity has made new discoveries and advancements, these are essentially rediscoveries or developments of a previously existing knowledge. According to Rumi, true creativity lies in integration with Akl-i Küll; this is the characteristic of prophets and enlightened ones. This situation, exemplified by the story of Cain and Abel, shows how knowledge has been transmitted and taught throughout human history.
The Path of Annihilation: The Key to Reaching Wholeness
In Rumi’s teachings, the ‘path of annihilation’ is a method that enables us to reach absolute truth by overcoming all our desires and expectations. The person who progresses on this path detaches from worldly ambitions and attains inner peace. According to Rumi, this path is the gateway to every desire; however, what matters most is that these desires now lose their meaning and are replaced by divine love. It is noted that form (appearance) also has its importance, emphasizing that internal transformation should be in harmony with external rituals. Because reaching truth requires both the purification of the heart and the body’s movement according to etiquette.
