The Balance of Authority and Responsibility

In Islamic morality, marriage is based on mutual respect, love, and responsibility between spouses. According to information compiled from the works of Imam Ghazali, while men have a leadership role in the family, this does not mean absolute domination. Rather, the man is in a position of guidance who should be fair and compassionate towards the woman. Ignoring a woman’s personal preferences or managing her with a coercive approach contradicts the fundamental principles of Islam; because this can be interpreted as the man not being pleased with Allah’s decree but subjecting his own nafs (self) to the control of the woman. Such behavior is equivalent to obeying Satan and prevents the marriage from functioning healthily.

Self-Discipline and Relationship Management

Both parties need self-discipline to cope with the difficulties experienced in married life. Imam Ghazali states that a person will experience great troubles in the long run if their nafs is not controlled. Just like a horse whose reins have been loosened, a rebellious nafs can lead a person to unwanted behaviors. Therefore, it is important for spouses to act with mutual understanding, tolerance, and patience. As Imam Shafi’i points out, excessive compassion towards segments such as servants and farmers may cause them to overstep boundaries of respect. Thus, showing a certain degree of firmness along with mercy ensures that relationships progress within healthy boundaries.

The Importance of Jealousy and Trust

Jealousy in marriage is an important issue that requires caution. Excessive jealousy fosters feelings of distrust and damages communication between spouses. However, there is also what is called ‘carefulness’ or ‘diligence’ in Islamic morality. This means being sensitive to situations that may negatively affect the relationship for both men and women. The example of the Prophet (PBUH) also conveys a message that jealousy should not be taken to extremes. Even Omar’s jealousy towards the Prophet (PBUH) was an indication of his humility and sincerity. A healthy marriage relationship must be built on trust, transparency, and mutual respect.
