Honesty’s Importance and Avoiding Deception
Thoughts compiled from Imam Ghazali’s work, Ihya-i Ulûm al-Din, clearly reveal the fundamental principles of commercial activities in Islamic ethics. In particular, the principle of honesty is at the center of the ethical dimension of trade. The situations mentioned in the source text emphasize that behaviors such as price manipulation, misleading sales strategies, and rushing customers to obtain unfair profits are contrary to Islamic ethics. Emphasis is placed on the seller’s need to act honestly, clearly state the defects of the goods, and not conceal the market rate. This approach contributes to establishing trust in commercial relationships and protects the Muslim’s reputation.
Benevolence: The Primary Goal in Commerce
In Ghazali’s work, the concept of ihsan goes beyond honesty, expressing kindness and generosity in commerce. Ihsan is not limited to being just but means providing benefit to the customer, understanding their needs, and showing compassion towards them. Avoiding excessive profit, especially being more lenient towards those with urgent needs or who are willing to pay a higher price because they desire the goods greatly, is an indication of ihsan. Ihsan is associated not only with achieving commercial success but also with providing important benefits in the afterlife; as it is believed that good behavior brings abundance and blessings to one’s provision.
Justice and Prudence: Protecting Customer Rights
In commerce, justice requires presenting the true value of a product to the customer. This means the seller does not conceal the defects of the goods and honestly states current market prices. Examples in the source text show the harms that deceptive practices bring in both this world and the hereafter, while also reminding Muslims that acting justly is obligatory. Acting with an awareness of protecting the customer’s rights not only strengthens commercial relationships but also increases social trust and contributes to conducting trade in accordance with the fundamental principles of Islamic ethics.
