The Importance of Earnings and the Sincerity of Intention
Imam al-Ghazali, a great scholar of Islamic ethics, emphasizes the importance of an individual securing their livelihood in this world, while also stating that this process should contribute to spiritual development beyond merely meeting material needs. The effort to earn a living should be a means for protecting oneself from poverty, providing for one’s family, and fulfilling one’s responsibilities within society. However, if this effort lacks sincerity and the correctness of intention, all endeavors may be in vain. al-Ghazali’s teachings remind us that earnings should serve a purpose, and that purpose should be to please Allah and benefit humanity. Wealth acquired through pride and ostentation can lead one astray from the path of truth.
Ethics and Honesty in Commerce
al-Ghazali’s works place great importance on upholding ethical boundaries in commercial relationships. It is emphasized that commerce is not merely about buying and selling, but also a sphere where human relations are regulated. Principles of honesty, reliability, and justice are essential for successful and halal earnings. Avoiding unfair competition, being honest with customers, and keeping one’s word are fundamental elements of commercial ethics. al-Ghazali states that merchants must be meticulous in both their worldly affairs and their afterlife accounting, as on the Day of Judgment, commerce will be evaluated alongside the righteous (Siddeeq) and martyrs. This further highlights the importance of commercial ethics.
Economics: Finding the Middle Way
al-Ghazali emphasizes the necessity of acting economically by avoiding extremes in this world. Finding a middle way, without succumbing to worldly pleasures or neglecting preparations for the afterlife, is key to living a healthy life. Excessive waste and spending can deplete one’s material resources while also shaking them spiritually. On the other hand, constant saving and deprivation can lower an individual’s motivation and spoil the enjoyment of life. Being economical means making conscious expenditures in accordance with needs and exhibiting a balanced approach to both enjoying a comfortable life in this world and arriving peacefully in the Hereafter.
