The Burden of Weakness and the Benefit of Marriage
Imam Ghazali’s writings on marriage offer a perspective focused on deeply understanding an individual’s inner world. He emphasizes the risks of remaining unmarried, particularly for those with weak selves struggling with their desires. While choosing celibacy might seem preferable to someone who struggles to control uncontrolled desire and avoid forbidden paths, Ghazali notes that even this can bring its own dangers. Because the risk of falling into sin is diminished by the pursuit of lawful means. In this context, marriage, when properly managed, can be a way for an individual to gain control over their nafs (self) and has an effect of increasing responsibility.
The Power of the Nafs (Self) and the Importance of Worship
According to Ghazali, marriage has both potential difficulties and benefits. However, in order to benefit from these advantages, it is essential to maintain control over the heart. It is necessary to suppress bad thoughts coming from the heart, focus on worship, and remember the transient nature of this world. Otherwise, marriage can lead an individual into a deeper form of subjugation; instead of avoiding forbidden acts, it can pave the way for moral decay. Worship, on the other hand, is the foundation of a person’s spiritual development, and every behavior that supports this development contributes to reaching the perfection of worship. Therefore, when making the decision to marry, an individual’s inner strength and capacity to take responsibility must be taken into consideration.
Balanced Life and Following the Prophet’s Example
Islamic tradition emphasizes the importance of strong faith and a high sense of responsibility for those who can carry out worship alongside marriage. The exemplary life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shows that maintaining balance between this world and the hereafter is possible. Continuing to perform acts of worship while fulfilling the obligations that come with marriage contributes to both individual development and strengthens social solidarity. However, every individual’s situation is different; therefore, special circumstances such as Jesus’s (peace be upon him) celibacy should not be accepted as a standard for everyone. Everyone should consider their own inner world and possibilities and make the right decision.
