The People or The Truth?
Understanding the turmoil within a person’s inner world is possible through the words of Abdülkadir Geylânî (may Allah be pleased with him). Often, we risk deviating from the path of seeking truth due to the allure of worldly life. Being caught up in fulfilling the expectations of the people can actually be an indicator of distancing oneself from Truth. For true seeking requires inner transformation, and this transformation must occur independently of external demands. Just as one going to Mecca might take the Horasan route, misdirections can lead us astray from our goal; we may strive to reach a seemingly apparent purpose while straying from our real intention.
The Importance of Inner-Outer Harmony
As Geylânî emphasizes, the cleanliness and sincerity of our inner world should reflect outwards. Only in this way can a true understanding of Tawhid emerge. While proclaiming our love for Truth outwardly, we must not contradict it with the love of people inwardly. This contradiction can be overcome not through verbal noise but through the state of the heart. Those progressing on the path of Truth must ignore the whispers of the Nafs and focus on inner purification. Because true Tawhid expresses inner sincerity and a turning towards Allah rather than external displays. This sincerity is the commendable state to be emulated by righteous servants.
Practical Knowledge and Union with Truth
Geylânî (may Allah be pleased with him) emphasizes that possessing knowledge alone is not enough; knowledge must be crowned with action. The burden of sin placed upon one who does not act upon their knowledge enslaves them to the lust for information. When the desire to be with Truth and His love settles in the heart, Allah draws the servant closer to Himself. With this truth, the emptiness of the Nafs dies, harmful nature loses its form, and a person experiences the peace of being united with Truth. The blessing of knowledge is revealed in those who transform it into action, and through this, true success is achieved. Let us remember that Truth is always Truth, and turning towards Him is progressing on the path of truth by overcoming the desires of the Nafs.
