The Importance of Compassion and Mercy
Advice compiled from Imam Al-Ghazali’s work, *Ihya Ulum al-Din*, clearly demonstrates that Islamic ethics are built upon compassion and mercy. Just as Allah looks with compassion upon His servants, we should show compassion to our children, family members, and all of humanity. This compassion should not merely be an emotional response but a fundamental principle guiding our actions. Someone acting with a compassionate perspective easily forgives, endures, and shows tolerance; thus contributing to their own inner peace and spreading positive influences around them. We must remember that those under Allah’s compassionate gaze will not be punished.
The Importance of Giving a Child a Beautiful Name
In Islam, the tradition of naming a child is not merely a ritual but an important sunnah with deep meanings. Al-Ghazali emphasizes that beautiful and meaningful names are part of a child’s identity. Names can reflect a person’s character and guide their future; therefore, name selection should be done carefully. Especially names expressing closeness to Allah, such as ‘Abdullah’ or ‘Abdurrahman,’ should be preferred. However, it is also noted that one should avoid using the Prophet’s kunya (nickname), as this may be seen as an attempt to assume his identity. This advice guides families in choosing names while contributing to equipping children with positive qualities.
Aqiqah Sacrifice and First Nourishment
Information found in Al-Ghazali’s work shows that postpartum traditions are also part of Islamic ethics. The slaughtering of an Aqiqah sacrifice is an important act of worship performed to celebrate a child’s arrival into the world and offer prayers for them. Furthermore, the tradition of offering halva or dates as the child’s first food was implemented to ensure blessings and nourish them in a healthy way. The incident of the Prophet feeding dates to his grandson, Hz. Hasan, highlights how valuable this practice is. These traditions are more than just religious rituals; they strengthen family bonds and are important steps contributing to children’s development.
