The Captivity of the Self and the Importance of Repentance
Admonitions emanating from the works of Abdülkadir Geylânî strikingly reveal how crucial it is for a person to distance themselves from worldly desires and progress on the spiritual path. While working and striving are natural needs for humans, this effort must serve a purpose; otherwise, after toil in this world, one may face the danger of being cast into the fire in the afterlife. Therefore, repentance—that is, turning away from past mistakes and returning to the right path—is an opportunity not to be missed before death. The sincerity and integrity with which repentance is performed will increase its effect.
Returning to Truth in the Shadow of Worldly Love
Geylânî’s words draw attention with the warning that worldly love can blind the heart and prevent a person from seeing the truth. Excessive attachment to gold and money can divert thoughts away from Truth and hasten one’s demise. However, it is possible to feel shame for this situation and correct oneself. We should see work as a means of earning sustenance, not neglect the commands of religion. We must not be influenced by wealth and shops, bind our hearts to Allah, and possess patience (tawakkul). We should ask our provision from Him and remember that working is a tool; for when the heart is devoted to Allah, closeness and familiarity are attained.
Faith, Generosity, and Moral Obligations
The dialogue between Prophet Jesus (a.s.) and Satan in the work brings to light the danger of those who act stingily alongside faith. A miserly believer may lose their faith, while a generous transgressor may turn towards goodness and attain salvation. This emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our moral responsibilities and being generous. The person who works for the sake of Allah and shares their resources with those in need will not feel regret when departing from this world. One should avoid looking at forbidden things (zina) with the eyes, listen to the advice of the Prophet, and understand that the sorrows of this worldly life are tests for the beauties of the hereafter.
