The Priority of Winning Hearts and the Role of Poetry
Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi emphasizes in his works how wrong it is to hurt or upset someone. He even shows understanding towards those who hinder the whirling dervishes’ dance; for what truly matters is that hearts are filled with peace. For Mevlana, poetry is not merely an artistic expression but also a tool used to distance people from the public sphere and assist them on their inner journeys. Although he seems weary of poetry, he actually sees it as a way of winning hearts; because words touch the soul and bring hearts closer together.
The Truth of Worship and the Power of Speech
According to Mevlana, worship goes beyond external rituals and expresses an inner meaning. Prayers or fasting are ways of worship; what truly matters is the purification of the heart and its turning towards God (Allah). Speech is the most fundamental tool for grasping and conveying this truth. When Mevlana says that speech is like the fruit of a tree, he indicates that they are intertwined with worship. Everything has its foundation in speech; without it, understanding and awareness are not possible. Worship gains meaning more from intentions than from actions.
The Togetherness of Hope and Fear: The Struggle of Humanity
Mevlana expresses that there is a balance between hope and fear at the foundation of human life. Working without hope is impossible, while fearless hope is naivety. Fear motivates us to work harder; however, this fear must be overcome. Humans constantly wage war between reason and desire; some discipline their intellect and approach angels, while others become slaves to desire. According to Mevlana, the dervish moves back and forth between these two extremes, constantly engaged in a struggle. Maintaining this balance is humanity’s true test.
