The Importance of the Inner Struggle

The works of Imam al-Ghazali are full of scientific and moral advice that leads a person to both worldly and afterlife happiness. At the center of these advices lies self-accounting (Nafs Muhasebesi). The Nafs is a power that reigns in the inner world of man, constantly wanting to follow its desires. As frequently expressed in al-Ghazali’s works, succumbing to this power distances one from truth and leads to moral decline. Conversely, the person who can control their Nafs finds peace in this world and attains salvation in the afterlife. This inner struggle is not an easy battle; it requires patience, perseverance, and divine assistance.

The Value of Knowledge and Reaching Truth

Al-Ghazali sees knowledge not only as academic knowledge but also as a tool that forms the basis of moral maturity. However, knowledge itself is not sufficient; this knowledge must be ingrained in the heart and guide a person’s behavior. As in the stories told by al-Ghazali, sometimes one may struggle to understand and implement even when possessing correct information. Constant effort is necessary to reach truth, dispel doubts, and purify the heart. For dirty feelings in the heart hinder seeing the truth.

Patience and Hope: Al-Ghazali’s Teaching

The importance of patience in struggling with the Nafs is frequently emphasized in al-Ghazali’s works. Resisting the desires of the Nafs is a challenging process, and one must be patient during this process. It is also important not to despair. A person can overcome all difficulties by entrusting themselves to Allah and seeking His help. Al-Ghazali’s teaching of patience and hope not only cultivates the Nafs but also serves as an armor against difficulties encountered in all areas of life. By acting with trust, one can seek wisdom within every adversity.
