Inner Purification and the Correctness of Intention

In Sufi thought, worldly life is like a testing ground. As emphasized in the works of Shaykh Abdulqadir al-Geylani, to be among the inhabitants of Paradise in this world, it is essential to purify the heart and overcome love for the world. This requires a continuous process of self-accounting; carefully examining our mistakes and correcting our intentions. It should not be forgotten that we must sift through the desires and passions within our hearts and turn towards Allah. This purification process removes us from the whispers of our nafs (ego) and allows us to progress more firmly on the Right Path. Acting upon the principle, ‘He who knows himself, knows his Lord,’ one can attain inner peace.

The Difference of People of Truth and Avoiding Entertainment

In al-Geylani’s teachings, the differences between the people of truth and ordinary people are clearly drawn. Those on the Right Path speak words that bring solace to the people rather than entertaining them; they offer advice. This is related to their diminished interest in worldly pleasures and their attainment of inner tranquility. For them, it is important to seek truth and live according to it, rather than acting according to the expectations of the people. However, progressing on this path is not easy; it is a virtue rarely found even among the esteemed ones. This can sometimes lead to the people of truth being misunderstood or marginalized by society, but their sincerity and determination keep them above these difficulties.

Repentance, Obedience, and Nafs Training: The Keys to Salvation

In al-Geylani’s teachings, repentance and obedience are greatly emphasized. Turning back to Him is the antidote to rebellion. Justice against oppression and truthfulness against errors are the most important remedies. Training the nafs (ego) is one of the keys to salvation. For this purpose, methods such as accustoming the nafs to hunger and thirst, stripping it bare and leaving it alone are recommended. However, patience and seeking refuge in Allah are important during this process. Harmony between inner and outer self, acting through silence, and constantly remembering Allah purifies the heart and elevates the soul. It should be remembered that happiness begins with love for Allah; we must train our nafs knowing that everything else is transient and turn towards our Lord.
