The Bondage of the Self and Attaining the Perfect Human (al-Insān al-Kāmil)

In Sufi thought, the self (nafs) is a potential hidden within the human’s inner world. This potential can be the raw material for ascending through divine love, but it is also the point of attachment to worldly desires. Great mystics like Imam Ghazali have considered the discipline of the self essential for a person’s spiritual maturity and elevation to the rank of the Perfect Human (al-Insān al-Kāmil). Controlling the self is not limited to being cleansed of bad behaviors; it is also a path to finding inner tranquility, purifying the heart, and strengthening connection with our Lord.

Patience, Gratitude, and Humility: The Fundamental Pillars of Self-Education

The discipline of the self is a long and patient process. During this process, it is very important for a person to face difficulties with patience, to be grateful for Allah’s grace in every situation, and to possess humility. These virtues, often emphasized in Ghazali’s works, are the fundamental pillars for keeping the self away from its desires and directing it towards good deeds. Qualities of the self such as arrogance, pride, and ostentation must be overcome through patience and replaced with virtuous qualities like humility, gratitude, and contentment. In this way, the self becomes a servant to its owner and guides them toward truth.

Purification of the Heart and Turning Towards Divine Existence

The discipline of the self also requires purification of the heart. Purifying the heart from worldly desires, greed, and envy makes it easier to turn towards divine existence. In this process, remembrance (dhikr), reflection (tafakkur), and supplications (duas) are important tools. As Imam Ghazali stated, a person cannot grasp truth or establish a true connection with our Lord unless the heart is cleansed. Remembrance fills the heart with Allah’s reminder; reflection helps a person to know themselves and understand the secrets of the universe. Supplications allow the heart to find tranquility and receive divine help. Thus, the self is disciplined, the heart is purified, and the person draws closer to their Lord.
