Prophethood and Inner Awareness
In Islamic thought, grasping the truth of prophethood is not a process that can be achieved merely by repeating words. As emphasized in the works of Imam Ghazali, this profound understanding is closely linked to an inner awareness called spiritual delight. Delight here refers to the peace and tranquility brought about by nearness to God, divine love, and purification of the heart, rather than worldly pleasures. A person who does not understand the secret of prophethood only performs external rituals; but cannot truly comprehend its true meaning. This inner delight opens the heart and allows a person to understand divine messages more deeply.
Miracles and The Path of the Prophets
According to Imam Ghazali, the miracles emanating from the prophets are their states in the early times of previous prophets. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) retreating to the Hira cave for worship and the Arabs saying, “Muhammad loved his Lord,” are concrete examples of this spiritual journey. This is not merely an external act of worship, but also a sign that the heart is ecstatic with divine love and turning towards God. A person who experiences spirituality can better understand the meaning and importance of miracles; because they are a reflection of how close the prophets were to the divine source. Patience, perseverance, and purity of heart are of great importance on this journey.
Faith: Knowledge, Delight, and Experience
As Ghazali stated, the foundations of faith are built upon three important elements: knowledge, delight, and experience. Knowledge is the accumulation of information; delight is spiritual awareness; and experience is putting that knowledge into practice. It becomes difficult to find the right path without knowledge, while without delight, the internalization of faith may remain incomplete, and without experience, faith remains merely a theoretical concept. With the coming together of these three elements, a person can more firmly grasp the truth of prophethood and direct their life with this understanding. Those who participate in spiritual gatherings are supported on this path and kept away from misguidance.
