The Necessity of Awakening from Ignorance
Humanity is born into a state of ignorance and often lives within its grasp. The teachings of Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani emphasize the importance of awakening from this ignorance. It reminds us to awaken those who sleep, invite those who are lost back to the path of truth, and remember divine mercy. However, this awakening occurs not through outward, worldly concerns, but through an inner transformation. For our ego (nafs), which operates according to base desires, constantly pushes us towards worldliness and ignorance. Therefore, the first step on the spiritual journey is to discipline this ego.
The Danger of Worldly Love and Its Obstruction of Truth
Geylani’s words draw attention to the danger of worldly love. Desires such as greed for wealth and the desire to gain the approval of people distance one from truth. A person who acts with these concerns may eventually stray onto the paths of disbelief and regret their actions. True richness lies not in material possessions, but in progressing on the spiritual path and attaining divine mercy. Knowing that sustenance is decreed leads to abandoning futile striving and opens the door to repentance and turning towards truth. The eye that cannot see the truth becomes blinded by worldly desires and misses true values.
The Importance of Repentance, Sincerity, and Turning Towards God
Shaykh Geylani’s teachings center around repentance (tawbah) and sincerity (ikhlas). To repent is to acknowledge past mistakes and turn away from them; sincerity is performing actions solely for the sake of Allah. These two virtues are the keys to progressing on the spiritual journey. Turning towards God means abandoning trust in anything other than Him and surrendering completely with one’s entire being. This surrender cleanses the heart, opens the eye of the heart, and allows one to see what is happening in the unseen realm. Those who follow the path of Allah avoid the flaws of the world, turn towards their Lord, and thus attain true peace. The person who understands truth leaves behind his worldly concerns and is molded by divine love.
