The Distance Between the Carnal Self (Nafs-i Emmare) and the Perfect Human (al-Insan al-Kamil)
In Islamic Sufism, a person’s spiritual journey is closely linked to the effort of disciplining their self. Great thinkers like Imam Ghazali have detailedly explained the different stages of the self and the difficulties in these stages. The nafs-i emmare is the initial stage, characterized by being captivated by desires, chasing worldly pleasures, and a tendency to stray from moral values. The Perfect Human (al-Insan al-Kamil), on the other hand, is the ideal human who has completely disciplined their self, drawn closer to God, and been molded by divine grace. The distance between these two points is a long journey that must be overcome with personal effort and willpower; it requires patience, guarding against hypocrisy (riya), and constant introspection.
The Role of Willpower and Discipline within the Context of Tawhid
An important point frequently emphasized in Ghazali’s works is the role of willpower. A person can resist the bad desires of the self with their will; however, for this willpower to be strong, they must turn towards God, seek refuge in Him, and deeply embed the belief in Tawhid within their heart. Tawhid is not merely a verbal affirmation but also placing God at the center of every aspect of life. A person who acts with this awareness escapes from the pressures of the self and attains moral maturity. Ghazali also mentions that tawakkul (reliance on God) is an important tool in this journey; tawakkul signifies surrendering to God and being content with His decree, as a requirement of faith.
Patience, Introspection, and the Purification of the Heart
Disciplining the self is not a process that can be easily achieved. Patience is one of the most important elements of this journey, because disciplining the self requires constant struggle and involves an undulating course. Regularly performing introspection – meaning reviewing one’s mistakes, questioning intentions, and learning – is also a behavior that should not be neglected in this process. The purification of the heart progresses parallel to the discipline of the self; purifying the heart brings a person closer to God and allows them to be filled with spiritual grace. Ghazali’s teachings continue to serve as a source of inspiration for us on this challenging but rewarding journey.
