The Hidden Traps of the Nafs and the Importance of Awareness

Self-accounting, a cornerstone of Islamic ethics, is a critical process for a person to know themselves and draw closer to their Lord. The works of great thinkers like Imam al-Ghazali guide us in understanding the insidious traps of the nafs (ego) and being conscious of them. The nafs can make a person dependent on worldly pleasures, hindering their spiritual progress. Therefore, disciplining the nafs requires constant effort and inner struggle. Al-Ghazali’s teachings are of great importance in showing ways to recognize and purify the weaknesses of the nafs; for knowing oneself is the first step in understanding one’s Lord.

The Power of Patience and a Virtuous Life

The concept of patience, frequently emphasized in al-Ghazali’s works, is the fundamental pillar of controlling the nafs and achieving goals. Maintaining patience in the face of life’s difficulties prevents the nafs from becoming dissatisfied and helps to establish inner peace. Being patient is also an important element of living a virtuous life; because patience increases one’s acceptance of divine will (tawakkul) and allows them to see events from the right perspective. Al-Ghazali’s exhortations encouraging patience offer guidance that contemporary people deeply need; for patience is one of the pillars of faith.

Inspiration and Humility: Keys to Reaching Spiritual Heights

Al-Ghazali’s teachings emphasize how important inspiration (ilham) and humility (tawazuu) are for spiritual development. Inspiration is a divine grace that descends into the heart; however, one must be humble in order to understand and correctly interpret this grace. Humility means belittling oneself and respecting the rights of others. Straying from humility on the spiritual journey can lead to the disease of pride (kibr), which isolates a person from their Lord and other people. Al-Ghazali’s emphasis on inspiration and humility contributes to a person’s purification of their inner world and reaching spiritual heights.
