Appearance and Depth: Kingship, Pharaohhood, and Testing
A recurring theme in the works of Mevlânâ Celaleddin Rumi is the danger of being deceived by outward appearances. Just as a king’s favor or adversity can be, so too can God’s trials sometimes appear negative on the surface. It should not be forgotten that even powerful and mighty figures like Pharaohs may face difficulties as part of divine plan. Those who are people of the heart strive to see the deeper meaning behind events rather than being swayed by superficial judgments. Trials, even when appearing as a rejection, can actually be a different manifestation of divine mercy.
The Purpose of Creation: To Know and Express God
According to Mevlânâ, the fundamental purpose of creating the universe is for the Divine One to reveal Himself. This revelation occurs through various means, such as grace or trials. Each living being has the potential to express God through its very existence; some realize this truth while others remain heedless. As it is emphasized that every particle of the world must be a witness, it becomes clear that everything expresses the existence and power of God. This expression sometimes manifests openly as gratitude, but at other times occurs through trials; for proof only gains meaning with the presence of denial.
The Challenging Path of Spirituality: Struggle with the Ego and the Importance of Gratitude
The spiritual journey is fraught with the challenges of the carnal self (nafs-i emmare). A person is compelled to desire evil; for the training of the ego can only be achieved in this way. However, it is important not to consent to this evil, but rather to strive to eliminate it. True gratitude is accepting both grace and adversity. For trials mature a person by increasing patience and gratitude. Friendship and solidarity also play an important role on this path; for dervishes are like one body and share each other’s pain. To be grateful is the antidote that increases blessings, and allows us to turn even difficult times into opportunities.
