The World as a Marketplace and the Value of Intention

Counsel reflected in the works of Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani encourages us to view the world as a marketplace. However, it emphasizes that we should focus on the commerce of the Hereafter rather than acting solely with commercial concerns. This world will scatter like dust after an hour; therefore, it is important to keep the intention of our hearts pure, beyond what we buy and sell. Just as a coin dealer values honesty, affirming the oneness of God (tawhid) and seeing beautiful deeds for Allah are valid commodities in the marketplace of the Hereafter. However, those who possess these qualities are few; this should encourage us to take more conscious and sincere steps.

Avoiding Haste and Submission to Allah

Al-Jilani’s advice is that haste can mislead a person, and patience bears fruit. Instead of rushing while waiting for the morning, being engaged in worship allows the desired results to come naturally. Emphasis is placed on moral values such as getting along well with people and not wanting what is not rightfully yours from others, and it is reminded that everything is subject to an order. Submission to Allah elevates a person; this is possible through patience in the face of difficulties and trust (tawakkul). Patience in solitude is also a path filled with rewards.

Disciplining the Self and Progressing on the Path of Truth

Al-Jilani invites people not to be slaves to their nafs (lower self), but rather to discipline it for Allah. The importance of displaying a moral stance through principles such as not oppressing others, upholding justice, and avoiding taking property by force is emphasized. Complete submission to Islam means obeying the commands of Sharia and filling the heart with the light of Allah. To progress on the path of truth, we must abandon intermediaries, distance ourselves from worldly benefits, and become familiar with Him. Patience on this path increases faith and brings one closer; thus, wisdom is attained through the windows that open to the realm of the heart.
