Truth and Willpower
The teachings of Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani, an important representative of Sufi thought, invite humanity away from worldly distractions and towards an inner journey. He emphasizes that truth encompasses not only outward behavior but also the purity of the heart and the sincerity of intention. Al-Jilani states, “Righteous individuals renounce all kinds of sentences, both great and small,” signifying freedom from ostentation, hypocrisy, and worldly expectations. This is not simply a moral command, but also a tool for developing willpower; because inner purity also increases the ability to overcome external obstacles.
The Power of Patience and Reaching the Sublime Goal
In al-Jilani’s teachings, patience is one of the most fundamental virtues. Emphasis is placed on the continuation of patience even when desires are not fulfilled, prayers are not answered, or unexpected difficulties arise. This is not merely an expression of tolerance but also a sign of faith and submission. Patience brings healing to the heart, opens the way to auspicious outcomes, and nourishes a sense of closeness. According to al-Jilani, the person who bravely faces hardships with patience attains inner maturity and becomes closer to Allah.
Disciplining the Self (Nafs) and Turning Towards Truth
Al-Jilani’s teachings also emphasize the importance of disciplining the self (nafs). Calming the nafs, reducing love for the world, and turning towards The Divine are steps that must be taken on the path to truth. Avoiding stinginess, believing in Allah’s generosity, and not valuing anyone other than Him are fundamental elements of this process. Along with the discipline of the nafs, the nobility of the heart also increases, and the individual rises to the station of prophets, martyrs, and the righteous. This inner transformation is not only a personal development but also an important step on the path to serving humanity.
