The Limits of Praise and the Need for Inspiration
Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani’s words strikingly express the depth of a person’s sense of praise for Allah. He begins by confessing his own helplessness, emphasizing that human language and intellect are inadequate to fully express the true praise of the Lord. At this point, Jilani directs us towards a quest for inspiration by presenting as an example someone who bestows the most beautiful praise, understanding the essence of divine names and attributes. The path of true tawhid (oneness) and surrender begins with a person transcending themselves and being illuminated by their love for the Lord. Progressing on this path requires overcoming the obstacles of the ego and undergoing inner transformation.
The Jihad of the Ego and Gaining Inner Peace
In Jilani’s teachings, reforming the ego holds great importance. The ego is depicted as a constantly opposing force, inclined to create unrest and confusion. Therefore, striving against the ego – that is, purifying oneself from its evil – is a necessity. Being a warrior of jihad (striving) is a prerequisite for performing acts of worship with love. Only after this struggle can one gain trust in the ego; then, true peace and tranquility will flourish in hearts. Instead of leaving the ego in the hands of others, following the example of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), setting it aside, and purifying it from personal desires are important steps towards spiritual maturity.
Patience, Surrender, and the Doors to Divine Assistance
Jilani’s words once again remind us of the importance of patience and surrender in the face of the manifestations of destiny. In order not to extinguish the light of faith, to preserve trust and sincerity, it is essential to accept every event that occurs with contentment. Being patient attracts divine assistance; it is a step on the path to the blessings of the Hereafter. Those who persevere in this patience are honored with the title “Hero.” To progress on the right path throughout life and receive Divine assistance, one must connect with Him, seek refuge in His existence, and awaken from the sleep of heedlessness. The path of surrender is paved with patience, and those who proceed on this path attain truth through Allah’s grace.
