The Narrative of Inner Struggle
In Islamic Sufism, recognizing oneself and deepening one’s relationship with God requires overcoming the obstacles of the nafs (ego). Great mystics like Imam Ghazali have expressed the difficulties and subtleties of this inner journey in their works. The nafs is a natural force aimed at fulfilling human basic needs; however, if it remains uncontrolled, it can lead to selfishness, arrogance, and worldly ambitions. This hinders spiritual progress and makes it difficult for humans to reach God. Ghazali emphasizes the importance of recognizing the whispers of the nafs and resisting them, offering a guide for winning the inner struggle.
Harmony of Knowledge and the Heart
Knowledge is highly valued in Ghazali’s works; however, it is essential that knowledge penetrates the heart and transforms into action. Knowledge acquired solely through reason does not bring humans closer to truth; the heart must be purified and enriched with love for God. The heart is connected to the human spiritual dimension and, when properly guided, opens the door to divine grace. When knowledge integrates with the heart, it leads to moral maturity and beautifies one’s behavior in the world. This unity is of critical importance for humans to achieve both worldly and afterlife happiness.
The Importance of Patience and Submission
Patience is an unshakeable necessity when progressing on the spiritual path. The difficulties, obstacles, and hardships encountered by humans are parts of trials and must be overcome with patience. Ghazali’s works explain the importance of patience through various examples; while tawakkul expresses acting with submission in the face of destiny’s play. Tawakkul means that a person does not abandon their effort, but entrusts the results to God. This understanding helps humans achieve inner peace and approach life with a more positive perspective. When the Sufi journey is crowned with patience and tawakkul, humans draw closer to their Lord and attain spiritual maturity.
