Nihanî's Work: Background and Significance
Written by Ali Nihanî in the 19th century, *Velayetname-i Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli* is an important part of Turkish Sufi literature. This work provides a valuable resource for understanding the Bektashi community of the period and its belief system, while also showcasing the poet’s literary talent. The purpose of writing this work was to transmit the life and teachings of Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli to future generations. However, this work, which some researchers believe belonged to Firdevsi-i Tavil, is actually a rewritten *velayetname* in Ali Nihanî’s own style. This situation further enhances the original value and importance of the work.
The Poet’s Literary Identity and Language Use
Ali Nihanî is known as a brilliant poet who has mastered Arabic and Persian thanks to his madrasa education. This knowledge base causes him to carry traces of classical literary understanding in his works. While he generally uses simple language in the *Velayetname*, he adopts a more heavy and ornate style influenced by his madrasa education in laudatory poems. The poet’s skillful use of meter and his expression of respect for Hz. Ali and Ahl al-Bayt through rhyming verses are important aspects of his literary personality. Arabic and Persian words within the work reflect the literary tastes of the period.
The Structure and Thematic Depth of the Work
The *Velayetname* is a comprehensive work consisting of 5920 couplets. The work, which deals with many topics from Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli’s lineage to his childhood, education, and miracles, also includes musammat poems in addition to rhyming verses. The poet presents a different perspective by writing laudatory poems for Hz. Abu Bakr, Hz. Omar, and Hz. Osman in the work. Ali Nihanî’s other work, *Menakıb-ı Murtazaviyye*, also attracts attention for dealing with similar themes. The role of Feyzullah Efendi in the writing process of the *Velayetname* and its place in the Hacı Bektaş Veli Lodge make it important both as a religious text and as a literary work.
