The Light of Dhikr in the Shadow of Deceit
The teachings of Ahmed Yesevî point to a fundamental truth about human life: the prevalence of falsehood and its leading to spiritual decline. The saying ‘El kezzabu la ümmeti’ strikingly expresses how lying has erased the reputation of a society and weakened faith. However, Yesevî offers dhikr as a beacon of hope against this darkness. Dhikr is not merely the repetition of words; it is the heart’s turning towards Allah. This ritual fills the emptiness within the person, initiates them into a spiritual purification process, and helps them reach true tawhid (oneness with God). As Yesevî emphasizes, the universal power of dhikr is so strong that it can even drive away Satan.
The Importance of Purity and Sincerity in Dhikr
In Yesevî’s teachings, purity extends beyond physical cleanliness to encompass spiritual purity. Dhikr performed without purity is not only ineffective but can also shake a person’s faith. This demonstrates that the act of dhikr is directly linked to the sincerity and intention of the heart rather than being merely a verbal ritual. Spiritual preparation before engaging in dhikr allows a person to cleanse their inner world and feel closer to Allah. A person who performs dhikr with this awareness purifies themselves from worries and progresses towards attaining true peace.
Dhikr, Asceticism, and Sincerity on the Path to al-Kamil
The teachings of Ahmed Yesevî underscore the need for a person to discipline their nafs (ego) and distance themselves from worldly pursuits. Avoiding arguments with ignorant or base people, avoiding hypocrisy, and staying away from ostentation are fundamental principles of asceticism (zühd). Sincerity, honesty, and devotion in dhikr are the most important elements that lead a person to al-Kamil – the perfect human. Yesevî reminds those who progress on this path to patiently endure suffering, surrender to Allah, and consider His pleasure in every situation. A heart purified through dhikr finds true love and spiritual maturity; thus, the person begins to discover the secrets of the universe.
