The Origins and Studies of the Narrative Tradition of Saints
Narratives of Saints, which recount the life and teachings of Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli, are an important part of the Central Asian and Anatolian Sufi tradition. These works have been examined, scrutinized, and published by various researchers over different periods. Erich Gross’s German translation, Sefer Aytekin’s comprehensive study, Abdülbaki Gölpınarlı and Hamiye Duran-Dursun Gümüşoğlu’s meticulous investigations have contributed to the understanding of the work. In particular, Hamiye Duran’s doctoral dissertation and facsimile editions ensured that the text reached the present day reliably. Esat Korkmaz’s simplified publication also expanded the readership. These studies demonstrate both the historical and literary significance of the Narrative of Saints.
Ali Nihanî and Firdevsî: Two Different Approaches
Two prominent figures stand out in the narrative tradition of saints: Ali Nihanî and Firdevsî-i Rumî. Both narrate the life of Hacı Bektaş Veli, but they exhibit distinct differences in terms of style, content, and structural features. Nihanî’s work adopts a stance closer to the Sunni understanding while incorporating Sufi elements more intensely into the text. It is also noteworthy that he includes prayers and blessings for the Prophet Muhammad and begins with the declaration of oneness (tawhid). Firdevsî’s work, on the other hand, is a comprehensive masnavi written in metered verse and does not include different poetic forms such as odes and sextets found in Nihanî’s work. These fundamental differences between the two works offer readers the opportunity to understand the life of Hacı Bektaş Veli from different perspectives.
The Disciple-Spiritual Guide Relationship and Literary Reflections
In Narratives of Saints, the relationship between Ahmed Yesevî and Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli is frequently a subject of debate. While historical records indicate a significant time difference between the lifetimes of these two figures, in the narrative tradition, authors like Nihanî depict Yesevî as the spiritual guide of Hacı Bektaş Veli, which can be considered a literary preference. Ali Nihanî’s Narrative of Saints has become an important literary work by reinterpreting such traditional narratives and conveying them in his own style. This has contributed to the dissemination of Hacı Bektaş Veli’s teachings and the establishment of Sufi thought in Anatolia.
