The Corruption of the Nafs and the Desire to Be Above Knowledge

A frequent emphasis in Imam Rabbani’s letters is the truth that the whispers of the nafs (ego) are the greatest obstacle to the heart’s attachment to Allah Ta’ala. The human mind and intellect can be constantly occupied with thoughts; however, most of these thoughts do not focus on worldly desires or personal gain but rather divert the heart from the point where it should turn towards Allah. Therefore, the first step in the Sufi journey is for the nafs to perish, that is, to purify itself from its influence. This purification process requires patience and perseverance; for the allure of this world can easily lead one astray. A servant who cannot discipline his nafs will not be able to truly understand or internalize even if he learns knowledge.

The Importance of Suffering and Perseverance on the Path of Truth

The long periods of suffering endured by Sufi masters are not merely a ritual but also an effective way to purify the heart and reduce love for the world. However, it is important to note that the purpose of suffering itself is not the goal, but rather its use as a tool on the path of truth. Those who are truly sincere will eventually notice that their thoughts leave their minds. This varies even among scholars; some cannot rid themselves of worldly thoughts despite years of suffering, while others reach the truth in a shorter time. The important thing is to strive and seek refuge in Allah Ta’ala. For what is gained with perseverance lasts longer than what is obtained hastily.

Attachment to a Perfect Master and Explanation of Truth

The guidance of a murshid (spiritual guide) is of great importance on the Sufi journey. Advice taken from those with incomplete knowledge and lacking experience can be harmful; just as a person who does not know medicine might administer the wrong treatment. A perfect master is the safest way for an incapable and flawed human being to reach Allah. This bond should be like that of a mortician with a body; that is, complete submission must be shown to the murshid with one’s entire being. The presence of a perfect master opens the doors to reaching truth through form. Otherwise, one strays from the truth and experiences spiritual decline. It should not be forgotten that on this journey we must progress with our patience, our effort, and our love for Allah.
