Transcending Materiality and Turning Towards Truth
Imam al-Rabbani, an important representative of classical Islamic thought, draws attention to the potential for philosophical approaches to distance people from truth. Minds that cannot move beyond material existence become trapped in the concepts they define as ‘essence’ and neglect the depths of their inner worlds. This can lead to a loss of awareness of the ego known as the *nafs al-ammara*, which is constantly filled with bad and base desires. True understanding begins by grasping spiritual dimensions that can be accessed through the heart, surpassing the limits of our sensory perceptions. Therefore, attaining true knowledge requires overcoming mental limitations and undergoing a process of inner purification.
The Connection Between Heart and Soul
In Sufi thought, the heart holds an important rank beyond the physical organ. The heart serves as a bridge between the soul and the realm of command; just as electricity exists invisibly within a light bulb and emits light. To establish this connection, one must undergo a process of inner cleansing and purification. On the ladder of spiritual development, the heart is linked to different stages such as *sirr*, *hafī*, and *akhfā*. The scholars’ perception of truth as fragments of pottery indicates the difficulty they experience in comprehending this depth. Those who attain true knowledge realize the heart’s special connection with the Throne (Arsh) and thus witness the secrets of the universe more closely.
The Importance of Disciplining the Ego and Divine Love
The primary goal of the Sufi path is to discipline the *nafs al-ammara* and be imbued with divine love. This love aims to transcend worldly desires, surpass thoughts about the afterlife, and ultimately reach complete submission to God. At this point, strict adherence to Islamic rulings forms the foundation for progress on the path of the Sufi order and truth. True love overcomes all obstacles and turns the heart towards the Lord; worldly pleasures and sorrows lose their meaning, everything is flavored with His love. Those who reach this level find everything pleasing that God approves of and connect with Him in complete submission.
