The Importance of Introspection
In the journey of human existence, knowing oneself and conducting an internal accounting is one of the cornerstones of Islamic morality. The deficiencies and mistakes we observe can be the beginning of an inner awakening as well as external ones. For a believer, it is unacceptable to avoid exhibiting behaviors that Allah dislikes. This may be an indication of being under the influence of the nafs-i emmare (the ego filled with immorality and bad desires). Introspection is the first step in freeing oneself from this captivity.
Repentance and the Value of Time
In Islam, repentance means to be aware of one’s mistakes along with a sincere regret and demonstrating an effort to correct them. However, waiting for the right time to repent is a misconception; because opportunities may be missed. The postponement of good deeds with the thought of ‘I will do it later’ can actually lead us further astray. Knowing the value of time and being open to repentance at every moment is required by Islamic morality. Every breath is an opportunity to reconnect with Allah. Acting with this awareness is a way to make our lives meaningful and attain His pleasure. Making good use of time means turning towards actions that Allah approves.
The Guidance of Righteous People and Sincerity
Those ‘Allah men’ who are knowledgeable in Islamic teachings and aware of the realm of truth, carry the responsibility of guiding believers. Seeking their help and support is an important means of progressing on the right path. While following the footsteps of these guides, even accepting their minor criticisms is of great importance; because these criticisms can bring us closer to Allah’s pleasure. Acting with sincerity and being respectful towards those ‘Allah men’ are fundamental principles of Islamic morality. Disobeying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is actually an act of rebellion against Allah. Therefore, we should take care not to deviate from the Islamic path and strive to eliminate all improprieties.
