Ali Nihanî’s Birth, Education, and Arrival at Hacıbektaş
Ali Nihanî, known as a folk poet from Yozgat, lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His real name was Ali, and he produced works under the pseudonym “Nihânî.” While his exact birth date is unknown, it is estimated that he was born around 1838 in Yozgat. Nihanî developed himself through education received at an early age, studied at a madrasa (Islamic school) in Istanbul, and became an important scholar of the time. Upon invitation from Feyzullah Efendi, the Postnişin (spiritual caretaker) of the Hacı Bektaş Veliyüddin Lodge, he settled in Hacıbektaş from Yozgat and undertook the position of elementary school teacher (rüştiye muallimliği). During this period, he also taught students who would become important figures such as Ahmed Cemaleddin Çelebi and Veliyeddin Hürrem Çelebi.
The Values Reflected in His Poetry and the Importance of His Works
Ali Nihanî’s poetry possesses significant characteristics that reflect the spiritual and cultural atmosphere of his time. He frequently addressed the fundamental principles of the Hacı Bektaş Veliyüddin teachings in his poems. Being a copyist (müstensih) of the rhymed lineage narrative (manzum velayetname), it demonstrates his profound understanding and beliefs regarding Sufism.
