Worldly and Afterlife Balance
The fundamental philosophy reflected in the works of Imam Rabbani is focusing on the balance between this world and the afterlife. This world is a realm of trial; an illusion filled with temporary pleasures and hardships. However, attachment to this world is a significant trap that hinders reaching the endless blessings of the hereafter. True happiness is possible by abandoning worldly desires and turning towards Allah. This does not mean completely renouncing worldly pleasures; rather, it means evaluating every action and desire in accordance with the principles of Islamic morality. It is important for the intention to be directed towards worship even when fulfilling legitimate needs related to the world, such as giving Zakat and wearing beautiful clothes.
The Importance of Intention and Inner Effort
In the spiritual journey, intention is a critical element that directly affects the acceptance of actions. Even prayers and ordinary behaviors must have a sincere intention; they should be done to seek Allah’s pleasure and draw closer to Him. When we cannot intend, we are expected to force ourselves, to make an inner effort. Because spirituality is not something that can be easily obtained; it requires constant reflection, prayer, and self-discipline. Even if we cannot cry, striving to make oneself cry – that is, purifying the heart – is among the important steps of this journey. This inner effort facilitates our turning towards Allah and increases our spiritual maturity.
Knowledge, Gratitude, and Progressing on the Right Path
Having correct knowledge is essential to reach truth. This knowledge should be acquired under the guidance of scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah (The People of the Sunnah), and one must stay away from misleading sources. The degree of gratitude is directly proportional to the abundance of sustenance; therefore, it is expected that the wealthy should be more grateful than the poor. However, gratitude is not limited only to material blessings; faith and health also fall within the scope of gratitude. The processes of purification (tazkiyah) and self-discipline (terbiya al-nafs) are of great importance in the spiritual journey. This is the key to establishing balance between this world and the afterlife, progressing on the right path with knowledge, and ultimately attaining Allah’s pleasure.
