The nafs (the lower self; see: nafs) that is embedded within the human being is a journey necessary for turning away from the world and its hardships and turning towards Allah (God). On this journey, it is necessary to struggle against the traits, ambitions, and fears deceived by the nafs. The nafs is always an agent of inner struggle. This struggle is a process required for self-knowledge and turning towards Allah.
