The Foundation of Faith: Beyond Mental Obstacles

The teachings of Imam Rabbani prevent us from viewing faith as merely a mental process. While fundamental truths such as the existence of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad Mustafa (peace be upon him) are evident, these pieces of knowledge must affect the heart for it to be sound. The mind may seek truth through reasoning and proof; however, the primary concern is the inner purity of the heart. Just as a diseased gallbladder cannot perceive the taste of sweetness, a corrupted heart cannot fully feel divine love and faith.

The Captivity of the Nafs: A Disease Darkening the Heart

The fundamental problem in human creation lies in the nafs’s animosity towards Islamic morality. Failing to discipline the nafs leads to a sickness of the heart, which manifests itself through enjoying prohibitions, loving what is forbidden. Excessive attachment to worldly pleasures weakens faith and darkens the heart.

The Path of Purification: Filling the Heart with Divine Light

Purification of the heart – meaning its cleansing – requires both internal (nafs discipline) and external efforts (avoiding negative influences). Disciplining the nafs is achieved through adhering to Islamic morality and frequently mentioning the Shahada, while regarding external influences, it’s important to be with righteous individuals, seek knowledge, and perform obligatory acts of worship. Guidance from a spiritual guide is vitally important in this process; he provides the necessary knowledge and direction to cleanse the heart of its diseases. It must be remembered that a purified heart will see truth as it is and be filled with divine love.
